Westfalia '1844–н.в.

Founded in 1844 in Germany, Westfalia owes its name to the region where it was born: Westphalia, in north-east Germany. In this fiefdom of the steel industry, Westfalia began creating agricultural machinery before choosing a completely different destiny.

In 1951, the story of Westfalia conversions began with a customer request. The special conversion kit, dubbed the "Campingbox," was designed by Westfalia in Wiedenbrück for a British officer stationed in Germany. His order was a VW Transporter with a living area. It was to be neatly integrated into the vehicle and suitable for use as a bedroom, living room, and workspace. To achieve this, Westfalia fitted a VW bus with a double door between the B and C pillars and installed adaptable furniture and decorations behind the front seats. These were complemented by ruffled curtains that matched the checkered pattern of the interior. Everything was in keeping with the spirit of the times. A sofa bed, folding table, bench seat, tambour door cabinet, and sideboard completed the interior. The result was so successful that Westfalia soon began mass-producing the camping box, and the converted VW bus became the dream car of the 1950s: a multi-talented vehicle, a hotel on wheels.
