On August 12, 2008 Daimler AG launched Europe’s largest fleet test of hybrid trucks by presenting ten Fuso Canter Eco Hybrids to the eight customers (Amey, DHL, Hill Hire, Ringway, Royal Mail, Scottish and Southern, Tesco, and TNT) in London. All of the vehicles were fully labeled and painted in the respective company colors. The vehicles used in the test were tailored for European requirements and included hybrid systems with electric motor and the Euro 4 power train of the series-produced 7.5-ton Fuso Canter. They were equipped with a new measuring system to collect performance data and were serviced by two specialized Mercedes-Benz service centers located in the London metropolitan area.
The trial for the model under European conditions, which was scheduled to run for three years, was part of Daimler Trucks' "Shaping Future Transportation" global initiative. Announced in November 2007 at an event in Stuttgart, Germany, the initiative aimed to use clean, efficient drive systems and alternative fuels to make emission-free commercial vehicles a reality in the future.
