1886 – Benjamin Holt builds his first combined harvester in Stockton, California.
1890 – Benjamin Holt builds his first steam traction engine tractor.
1891 – C.L. Best begins his career working for his father Daniel Best at the age of 13.
1892 – The Holt Manufacturing Company is incorporated.
1904 – Benjamin Holt tests his steam-powered track-type tractor prototype for the first time.
1906 – Benjamin Holt tests his first gasoline-powered track-type tractor prototype.
1909 – The Holts purchase an existing plant in East Peoria, Illinois.
1914 – Benjamin Holt produces the Holt 75 Track-Type Tractor.
1925 – The Holt Manufacturing Company and C. L. Best Tractor Co. are merged to form the Caterpillar Tractor Co.
