At the end of the 1980s, the entire range of wheel loaders began to be produced for the first time at the Bishofshofen plant near Salzburg, Austria. In 1989, the model range already included seven different models. From the smallest wheel loader L 506 with an operating weight of 4.5 tons and a bucket volume of 0.7 m³, through the types L 508, L 510, L 521, L 531, L 541, to the wheel loader L 551 with a bucket volume of 3.5 m³ and an operating weight of 20 tons. Smaller machines had only hydrostatic drive, larger machines were additionally equipped with two- and three-speed gearboxes.

Since then, Bischofshofen has become the worldwide competence center for Liebherr wheel loaders. The experience with this type series that Liebherr gained on the market became decisive for the entire further development of wheel loaders.
