The business started in 1954 as a small engineering and equipment repair service. It was founded by Mr Irvine Bell (1920-11.10.2011) in Empangeni, Kwa-Zulu Natal, South Africa and among his early inventions were the unique self-loading sugar cane trailer and the tri-wheeler machine developed for this industry.

Over the years Bell Equipment has developed into a leading global manufacturer and exporter of a wide range of materials handling machines. The company manufactures and markets an impressive range of over 50 models of Articulated Dump Trucks, Wheeled Loaders, Tri-Wheelers, Rigid and Articulated Haulage Tractors, Backhoes, Forklifts, Dozers, Motor Graders, Excavators, Compaction Rollers and a range of customized equipment for the mining, construction, forestry, sugar and related industries.

1964 – Irvine Bell invents the revolutionary Tri-Wheeler loading machine.

1977 – Bell introduces the world's first heavy-duty Africa haulage tractor.

1982 – Applying the Hauler’s strong, simple design philosophy, Bell enters the Wheel Loader market.

1984 – From the new production facility in Richards Bay, South Africa, the first Articulated Truck enters service.

1986 – The Bell Super T Feller-Buncher revolutionises mechanical felling and bunching of timber in the forestry industry.

1989 – Bell targets heavy duty mining applications with the launch of the B40 Articulated Dump Truck.

1992 – Bell launches the T12 Forwarder for timber extraction and short haul from infield to roadside or depot.

1993 – The T17 Timber Truck is introduced for timber extraction over longer lead distances and higher speeds.

1994 – Bell Ultra C Loggers are extremely versatile and capable of handling both thinning and small clear-fell.

1995 – The TH120 Tracked Harvester offers a solution to felling, delimbing, cross-cutting and stacking of timber.

1998 – The Bell C-series ADT and wheeled loader ranges are launched.

2000 – L1204C Flexi-Loader/Piler slew loaders deliver high productivity for in-field loading in sugar and timber.

2001 – Bell releases Series ll haulage tractors into the market. Also, a new standard of excellence is set with the launch of the D-series ADTs.

2002 – Bell unveils the world’s largest Articulated Dump Truck, the B50D.

2003 – Truck assembly operations commence in Europe.

2010 – Series lll haulage tractors (904AF/1216AF ('09.2010-16), 904A/1216A ('12.2010-16), 1716A/1716AF ('2011-16)) make their entry.

2011 – Bell Equipment establishes beachhead in Russian market and secures distribution rights for Liebherr excavators in Africa.

2012 – Bell Equipment re-enters the Americas and commences the appointment of distributors and dealers in the region.

2013 – Bell Equipment launches the new E-series ADT and is granted distributorship rights for the Terex Finlay range of mobile crushing, screening and recycling equipment.

2014 – B60D set to revolutionise bulk earthworks. Bell celebrates 60 years in business along with the 50th anniversary of its tri-wheeled product and 30 years of ADT design and manufacture.

2015 – Series IV Haulage Tractors introduced.

2016 – Large E-series Articulated Dump Trucks released to the market.

2017 – In southern Africa Bell adds Kobelco excavators to its range and enters the tipper truck market with Kamaz trucks.

2020 – Bell takes its industry leading technology underground with new side-mount low profile ADTs. Bell also provides a niche solution with the introduction of TC7A and TC11A Tracked Carriers.

2021 – Series V Haulage Tractor and new B45E 4x4 introduced.
